Having a great lens can really make a good shot great or give you the flexibility to improve your photography. A good quality lens can be too expensive for most hobbyist photographers and can limit the shots they get. Early summer I was shopping around for a good prime lens but didn't want to pay the premium price of $600 to $1200 for a good quality lens. Shopping around at a local camera store I came across a used 50mm 1.4 Olympus OM mount manual focus lens. The lens was priced at $50 along with having to buy an adapter to fit the lens to my camera for $20.
First impressions of the build quality were good with the lens being metal and having a good weight to it. The kit lens that came with my camera is made with plastic that gives it a cheaper feel but lighter weight.
After a couple months using the lens I really enjoy it and it's my go-to lens for most of my shoots. The lens is a good bit sharper than the kit lens and better quality . The best part would be the fun factor of shooting with this lens. It is manual focus and gives me a better experience when shooting. There is a slight learning curve when shooting with a manual focus lens but well worth it. Most newer cameras offer focus peaking to guarantee tack sharp photos.
Next time when out looking for a new lens and you don't want to drop a lot of cash. Check out some older manual focus lens and adapt them to your camera. You can find some great deals on eBay or your local camera shop. Spending $1000 on a new lens is not worth it to me if I can get a lens with the same quality or slightly less for less than $100.
Below are some samples I took from a photoshoot of a local musician Tristen White with my Olympus OM mount 50mm 1.4. Please let me know what you think and if you will consider adapting some older lenses to your camera . Thanks Michael
