Nothing makes a two year old boy happier than seeing the "Choo-Choo" go by. So when the North Carolina Transportation Museum has train rides along with the Easter Bunny on board, it's a must go. It was a great day of fun seeing my son hunt for Easter eggs along with getting to see what he loves best, Trains. Along with this adventure I brought my D3100 to snaps some pictures and work on my composition and focus. I shot the majority of these photos in aperture priority mode and a couple in manual. I manually focused all of these pictures to see if I could get better results than using auto focus. Post processing was done with Lightroom CC and Lightroom mobile on my iPad mini. The weather for the day was a cloudy with a slight breeze.
Starting off with what I think are my best photos of the day, because they hold the best balance between composition and focus. Starting off with the picture of the vintage train. This to me is a great shot of a retired train in focus along with a high contrast edit. Second is my son Dylan playing on the rails waiting to catch a ride on the train. I love this photo because it catches a moment of relaxing but also fun by climbing on the rails because he can't stand still. Third picture is my favorite of the whole day because I caught him checking out the train as it goes by. The background is slightly blown out from just using a kit lens along with his wonderful hair blowing in the wind. The next picture is of my wife Leah and my youngest son, Noah. I love this moment I caught of him and my wife. Next is Dylan focused during the egg hunt. This was his first real Easter egg hunt where he kinda knew what was going on. Last is another picture of my son on the rails just with a different crop along with slightly different black and white edit.
These next photo's are good, but not great as far as photography goes. I like these picture's a lot since I was capturing great moments with my family, but missed on composition or focus. I caught three great moments of my dad with Dylan and Noah. I think I missed out on filling the frame with all three but happy with what I got. I almost got a great shot of my wife with Dylan on the rails, but caught him with his get away face. He was laughing just before I snapped the pic. I happened to catch Dylan right before the egg hunt started excited but the picture seems to show a gloomy background. Last is Noah driving Dylan around but missed out on focus but love that I caught both of them together. The composition is a little off as well. The black and white edit might be a bit much for some but I like how it turned out.
Now these are the photo's I just missed and wish I have got. Focus is way off and something I need to work on for moving subject. I should of moved the shutter speed up some but I wasn't prepared. This is Dylan during the egg hunt collecting as many eggs as he can. Such a great time watching him pick up the eggs along with the other kids. The last picture is Dylan running and showing how is mood was for most of the day. Deffinatly a great day.
All in all this was a great day with family and a good day to try to work on my photography. My kids and my wife are my favorite subjects and help me improve my photography. Feel free to comment with any tips or critiques. Thanks, Michael
